A Twitter user has come under intense criticism for comparing an oil painting by the legendary Vincent Van Gogh with a similar one painted more recently by Chinese artist Haixia Liu.  Comparing the famous 1888 “Café Terrace at night”  by the Dutch great with Haixia’s artwork  of the same scene, the user claimed Haixia “paints with more skill” and that Van Gogh is “overrated”.

The tweet quickly became a mock-fest, as art aficionados came to express shock at the tweeter’s apparent ignorance of the genre of post-impressionism. They also pointed out that the ingenuity of artworks like Van Gogh’s is not in their photorealism.

Haixia’s version is extremely similar to Van Gogh’s, with slight scenic differences. The original, also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, and, when first exhibited in 1891, currently hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
