Former child actor Dustin Diamond has died at the age of 44 from cancer, his representative has announced.
He was best known for playing Samuel “Screech” Powers in “Saved by the Bell”, the popular 1990s US sitcom about a group of high school friends and their headmaster.
Since completing a first round of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lung cancer last month, hiis condition had deteriorated fast in the last week, according to agent Roger Paul.
Paul stated in a statement on Monday, “Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”
A global hit series, Saved by the Bell ran for four seasons from 1989 to 1993.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have poured in from Co-stars and colleagues, including Mario Lopez, who acted the character AC Slater, Tori Spelling, Mark-Paul Gosselaar,who played Zack Morris, Tiffani Thiessen , who played Kelly Kapowski, and a host of others.
